Feeling dizzy can be scary and disorienting, but not all dizziness is the same. There are actually three different ways in which you may feel unsteady: dizziness, lightheadedness and vertigo. In either case, the feeling should definitely not be ignored, as it may be a symptom of any number of serious underlying health issues, such as problems with the inner ear, blood pressure and much more.

The textbook description for dizziness is the feeling experienced when you are moving, but everything around you seems still. There are many different things that can cause dizziness; dehydration, low energy from not eating enough, neck issues and organ issues. If you have been experiencing dizziness that is not going away and you have had it for more than a day or so, you should definitely consult your GP and have the issue looked at.

Vertigo on the other hand, is defined as the sensation felt when you are still, yet you feel as though everything around you is moving. Victims often feel like they are swaying, spinning or tilting in one direction. This can be accompanied by nausea, sweating, ringing ears and uncontrollable eye movements. Unless your vertigo is fleeting and obviously caused by exterior circumstances (like bungee jumping, for instance), you should visit your doctor and have it investigated.

Constant or recurring vertigo is a signal that something is dysfunctioning and causing an imbalance in your body. Some serious causes of vertigo may be a neurological problem like Ménière’s disease, a stroke or even a tumor. Sometimes a vertebrae misalignment, or subluxation, in the neck can cause or contribute to this imbalance, so if your vertigo is not going away, you should consult a Chiropractor.

The third kind of imbalance we often feel is lightheadedness. This refers to the feeling of disorientation or faintness when we stand up too quickly. In most cases, this is simply our blood pressure balancing out and will soon pass, without the need for worry. If it does not pass however and you are falling over or unable to immediately control your balance, you should consult a doctor or a chiropractor. This severe lightheadedness could be an indication of something wrong with the blood flow in your neck towards your brain, which can cause serious damage.

In chiropractic care, we focus on correcting joints that are displaced or moving poorly. Aligning these joints properly will free up the surrounding nerves and allow all the messages being sent to and from the brain, via the spinal cord to be delivered correctly.
