There are two main types of arthritis that Chiropractors see on a day to day basis. One is rheumatoid arthritis, the other and more common type, is osteoarthritis. Rheumatoid arthritis is when there is swelling and fluid in the joints, usually caused by an immune system deficiency. This kind of arthritis cannot necessarily be cured or treated through chiropractic, yet in some cases, chiropractic treatment can provide some relief from the symptoms.
On the other hand, osteoarthritis refers to the general wear & tear of bones, cartilage & joints which in time, will happen to most of us. Eventually our cartilage, the slick, cushioning exterior on the ends of our bones wears away. It then causes our bones to rub against bones, thus causing pain, swelling and stiffness. Over time, our joints can lose the strength and pain and it may become chronic.

If you have misplaced joints that are causing uneven movement throughout your body, this causes a lot of stress and unnecessary damage to the other joints, bones and cartilage. Osteoarthritis is inevitable in most of us, it is simply a part of ageing and nothing can undo the damage it causes.

What chiropractic can do however, is look at the parts of your body under the most stress and shift that stress, so that it may be distributed more evenly throughout your body. A Chiropractor will also analyse and help you to correct things like posture and movement, which can slow the progression of arthritis.

We all know good posture is important, yet it is absolutely vital to your spinal and overall health and wellbeing. If you tend to hunch your shoulders and your head sits too far forward, you are putting too much pressure on all the structures in the neck which hold up your head. A Chiropractor cannot reverse structural spine damage, but they can address joints in the spine that are still capable of movement and make sure they are working the best they can to bring the head back up to its natural position.

The main goal of chiropractic in the treatment of arthritis is to ensure every joint that has the potential to fully function, is doing just that. Looking at the body as a whole and enabling the efficient movement of every part possible, is the best way to manage arthritis and ensure that it doesn’t progress any faster.
