Cryotherapy in Newcastle
Cryotherapy uses cutting-edge technology to rapidly lower your body’s skin temperature with safe, non-toxic nitrogen vapour.
This dry mist gently cools the skin, triggering a natural protective healing response within the body, which has been scientifically proven to improve a wide range of health-related conditions. The process provides four main health benefits: cellular recovery, skin rejuvenation, weight loss, and physical and mental well-being.
As part of our aim to be Newcastle’s premier health and wellbeing facility, Chiropractic Plus has invested in world-leading technology to offer both whole-body cryotherapy, local cryotherapy AND cryotherapy facials in Newcastle.
Whether it’s for a specific health condition, athletic recovery, anti-ageing and fat loss, pain relief or general well-being, cryotherapy at Chiropractic Plus is your first port of call.

How does whole-body cryotherapy work?
Whole-body cryotherapy involves exposing the top layers of your skin to air vapour chilled to below -120°C for 2-3 minutes.
The short term super-cooling of your skin’s surface triggers your thermoreceptors to send signals to the brain making you think you are freezing. This sends your body into a defensive mode by quickly transporting the body’s blood, nutrients, and resources to the organs in the body’s core.
During the whole-body cryotherapy session, blood will rush first to the core and will rev up metabolism to create heat. Afterwards, blood returns to the extremities more oxygenated and carries newly released neurotransmitters that can dramatically lower inflammation, increase collagen levels, provide chronic pain relief, and boost mood.
Other benefits include anti-ageing and fat loss, accelerated recovery, and increased focus among many other positive effects. Using the cryosauna at Chiropractic Plus is the fastest, safest and best way to experience whole-body cryotherapy in Newcastle NSW
Benefits of whole-body cryotherapy
Whole-body cryotherapy for athletic performance and recovery
Leading sports trainers now recommend whole-body cryotherapy sessions be included in both pre-event AND post-event rehabilitation and recovery sessions for elite athletes.
Whole-body cryotherapy has become a powerful training and recovery tool both for professional athletes and amateurs. Before training, it can help to aid performance. After intense workouts and competition, cryotherapy sessions accelerate recovery and minimise delayed onset muscle soreness. In addition, whole-body cryotherapy is used to heal athletic injuries due to its ability to suppress pain for several hours, as well as relieve oedema.
Every athlete, whether professional or recreational, experiences delayed onset muscle soreness, also called DOMS – or “second-day soreness”. DOMS occurs after an intense workout as a result of microtears in muscles. Whether you are a professional athlete or a seasoned weekend warrior, whole-body cryotherapy can reduce DOMS symptoms so that you are able to return to efficient training faster. When every day counts in a tough competition or training schedule, you can’t skip a workout or reduce the load because of sore muscles. That is why whole-body cryotherapy has become indispensable in training and recovery protocols for athletes and sporting teams.

Local cryotherapy in Newcastle and Lake Macquarie
Unlike whole-body cryotherapy, which stimulates cold receptors all over the body, local cryotherapy allows us to target a specific location – much more powerful and efficient than traditional ice application.
Local cryotherapy provides the patient with a rush of oxygenated blood, a natural analgesic effect and a reduction in muscle tension in the area. With temperatures as low as -150°C, local cryotherapy generally takes about 5-10 minutes depending on the area it focuses on.
Post-session, the microcirculation in this area provides muscles with increased rates of healing and recovery, and the natural analgesic effect and relaxation of muscles allow the patient to increase their exercise tolerance, as well as strengthen the muscles and joints to reduce the risk of injury in the future.
Patients often combine local cryotherapy with whole-body cryotherapy, to target problem areas both from the “inside out” as well as from the “outside in”.
Local cryotherapy is commonly applied to:
- Ankles
- Elbows
- Neck
- Shoulders
- Knees
- Lower back
- Tendonitis
- Face and scalp
Local cryotherapy benefits
Local cryotherapy may be more beneficial than (or should be used in conjunction with) other cryotherapies if the client is facing a particular kind of injury or trouble area. This is particularly the case for athletes who have sustained an injury or anyone who has sustained a sprain or muscle pull or is recovering from surgery.
- Inhibition of inflammation
- Immunomodulation (stimulation of the immune system)
- Reduction of pain
- Reduction of spasm
- Improved joint mobility
- Decrease in muscle tension
- Overall quicker return to training/competition
- Decreased fatigue
- Improves circulation
- Decrease swelling
- Decrease of chronic pain syndrome
- Reduction of post-traumatic sessions
Combining whole-body cryotherapy with local cryotherapy is especially useful for those patients who have chronic inflammatory conditions.

How does local cryotherapy work?
Unlike whole-body cryotherapy, which involves the use of a cryotherapy sauna, local cryotherapy uses a smaller machine that includes a handheld piece allowing us to apply extremely cold air (-150°C) to the targeted area.
Local cryotherapy only takes minutes to complete and leaves the client with benefits that far exceed what traditional icing can provide. It is relaxing and may be appropriate for individuals who do not suit whole-body cryotherapy. Whether you are looking to improve physical performance, reduce wrinkles or scarring, or relieve pain and inflammation, local cryotherapy is available to provide you with results!

-
What is cryotherapy used for?
Cryotherapy is the process of exposing either the whole body, or targeted areas of the body, to sub-zero temperatures in order to elicit physical and mental health benefits.
Introducing a rapid reduction in temperature to the uppermost layers of the skin triggers a response within the autonomic nervous system, which boosts the body’s natural production of various positive chemicals and hormones. For example, it reduces inflammation in the body by boosting an anti-inflammatory chemical.
As a result, cryotherapy can be used for a wide range of conditions, from accelerated recovery, pain relief and anti-inflammatory benefits for sportsmen, to improving quality of life for people with chronic health conditions such as fibro-myalgia, migraine sufferers and rheumatoid arthritis; and the rejuvenation of ageing skin.
